What are the types of Golf Simulators?

There are three main types of golf simulators, each with there own pro’s and con’s. 

Photometric – photometric-based golf simulators, such as the SkyTrak and Foresight Sports GC2, are camera based systems that take high speed images of the ball immediately after impact. The images that are taken are then analyzed to obtain the measurements needed to render shot shape and distance. This type of golf simulator can be used both indoors and outdoors, providing added flexibility. One drawback is that these systems typically do not capture club data such as angle of attack, smash factor, etc. Data captured includes: speed, back spin, side spin, distance off center, and more.

Ball Speed

Measurement of golf ball’s velocity after impact. It is the main component in creating distance.  

Total Spin

Total spin is the amount of spin created around the tilt axis. Spin will determine the shape and lift of the shot.

Distance Off Center

The initial angle relative to the target line. Combined with side spin, determines the final position range relative to target.

Infrared – Infrared (IR) golf simulators, such as the Optishot, emit a light signal to capture the position of the clubhead through the swing.

Since they capture clubhead information to render shot results, it is not required to use a real ball. In our experience, these types of systems are not as reliable tracking as a Photometric or Radar based system. 

Radar (Doppler) – This type of golf simulator, such as the Voice Caddie SC300, uses doppler radar technology for tracking.

Doppler radar is also used by other industries to track objects, most famously aircraft and weather systems.

In a radar based simulator, a microwave signal is emitted from the unit and bounces back from the golf ball after impact.

Because it needs to be able to see it travel in flight post-impact, these types of simulators operate best outdoors. They can be used indoors as well, but results for tracking are always better outdoors.

What is the minimum Golf Simulator Space measurement?

One of the most common questions we receive from customers early on in the buying process is “how much space do I need”. Space requirements can vary from customer to customer based on their height & swing, as well as equipment used (screen, mat, projector, etc).

While there’s not a one-size-fits-all answer, it is our experience that a typical simulator setup is able to fit into most spaces.  You will need a space with minimum dimensions of:

This is the level that I was most interested in. I know most of you reading this are not going to be able to invest $10,000 – $70,000 in a home golf simulator.

Budget range

If you are on a tight budget but want a full simulation experience, you can do it for well under $5,000.

Technically you could get yourself into a basic home golf simulator for around $500 (if you have a computer that can run the OptiShot software already). Be aware that accessory costs like projector mounts and cable could add about $50- $200 more to your cost.

Mid Range – Under $10,000

If you have a bigger budget then you can get a much more accurate simulator, and increase the quality of all the materials you will use.

If you have some more money to invest in a unit like SkyTrak, then you will want to make sure the rest of the materials you use are going to last. Here is a potential package you can use:

Golfer’s elbow is a form of tendonitis that causes pain and inflammation in the tendons that connect the forearm to the elbow. The pain centers on the bony bump on the inside of your elbow and may radiate into the forearm. It usually gets better with rest. The medical term is medial epicondylitis. Activities that require repetitive gripping motions, such as throwing, rock climbing, racket sports, or weight training, can often lead to golfer’s elbow. What is the golfer’s elbow symptoms?

With golfer’s elbow, the pain you have can happen suddenly or with time. If you have golfer’s elbow, you might have:

• Stiffness in your elbow

Golfer’s elbow is usually caused by overusing the muscles in your forearm, which lets you grip, rotate your arm, and flex your wrist. Repetitive flexing, gripping, or swinging can cause pulls or tiny tears in the tendons. Things that can lead to golfer’s elbow besides golfing include:

• Sports that rely on lots of throwing movements, like archery, baseball, football, javelin throwing, and softball. Pitching a ball incorrectly for example, can lead to golfer’s elbow, too. In fact, it’s sometimes called pitcher’s elbow.
•  Sports that use a racket, like tennis. Not using the right techniques when playing or using them incorrectly can hurt your tendon. If you’re using a racket that’s too light or too heavy, that can also cause golfer’s elbow.
•   Weight training. If you don’t use the right technique for lifting weights, you can overwork your elbow’s tendons and muscles.
•  Repetitive movements. If you’re a carpenter, painter, plumber, or you work in construction, you can get golfer’s elbow. Lots of forceful, repeating motions can cause it.

People may also get it from using tools like screwdrivers and hammers, raking, or painting.

Exercises to Prevent and Treat Golfer’s Elbow

Most of the time, golfer’s elbow will go away without any special treatment, but you can do stretching and strengthening exercises to help make it go away faster. They can also help you avoid golfer’s elbow.

• Eccentric exercises strengthen the muscle while it’s relaxed, not tight.
• Stretching helps with mobility.

Golfer’s elbow stretch

You will feel this stretch in the underside of your forearm.

1. Extend your affected arm in front of you with your fingers and palm facing up.
2. Use your opposite hand to gently pull your fingers and wrist down toward your body.
3. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds.
4. Do 2–5 reps.

Isometric wrist strengthening (extension)

Keep your body still throughout this exercise.

1. While seated, place your affected forearm on a table or the arm of a chair with your palm facing down.
2. Place your opposite hand on the back of your affected hand.
3. Press your affected hand up, using your opposite hand to create resistance by pressing down.
4. Continue for 10 seconds, slowly increasing the resistance.
5. Gently release. Do 15 reps.

Beginning with the two woods in the set, the Profile collection features a stunning driver and hybrid duo that accommodates swings of all speeds while boosting distance and shot height.

The driver in the Profile set has a slightly smaller clubhead than in other junior sets we tested, but that didn’t take away from the quality contact we witnessed in swing after swing. Although Wilson does not provide the loft on the club, we estimated that it stands around 15-degrees.

The second wood is a hybrid, somewhere around 25-degrees, that has a classic look with a high-quality finish. With a flatter sole, the hybrid does well at staying low to the ground for shots off the grass or while using a tee.

The irons are unique, first in that there are three of them, and second in that Wilson has discarded using numbers on the clubs and has instead, placed designations on them. For example, in the Profile set, there is a “Long Iron,” “Short Iron,” and “Wedge.”

The Long Iron is something akin to a 7-iron and provides solid pop when hit in the center of the club face. Same goes for the Short Iron, which translates to a 9-iron in loft, also giving the junior golfer terrific height on shots for a soft landing on the green.

Finally, we loved the inclusion of a wedge. It is incredibly essential to get your child feeling comfortable with a wedge since most scoring is done with strong wedge work around the greens.

A stand bag is that it has strong legs and a padded top to protect the clubs completes the set. We would have liked a rain hood included in the Profile set, but there’s little to complain about as this is one terrific set for a young golfer with a bit of experience on the course.

All five of the major clubs in the set have large sweet spots that accent forgiveness and reduce the shot-killing sidespin that ruins rounds.

The putter in the Profile JGI set is a blade-style putter that has a soft insert through the heart of the club face. The club provides reliable roll during our testing, but some children may feel more confident with a mallet’s look and feel.

Again, if we had one big complaint about this terrific set, it is that there aren’t more clubs! Although we love the addition of the wedge, the set feels lacking in a sense by the lack of completion. Even though Wilson says the club set range is up to 14 years old, it would be hard to send a high school-aged golfer to a tournament in a set like this as you would need far more clubs.

Another solid addition to the best junior golf clubs market, the Wilson JGI is great for golfers around the age of 11-12.

Having hosted the PGA Tour’s Lucky International Open from 1961 to 1969, Harding Park did not see elite tournament golf again until 2005 when it hosted the WGC-American Express Championship. Following that event, an agreement between the city and the PGA Tour was reached whereby several more PGA Tour events were scheduled to be played at Harding Park; The course hosted the 2009 Presidents Cup, the 2015 WGC-Cadillac Match Play, the 2020 PGA Championship, and is scheduled to host the 2026 President’s Cup. Harding Park has also hosted the Champions Tour‘s season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2010, 2011, and 2013.

The 18-hole “Harding Park” course at the TPC Harding Park facility in San Francisco, California features 6,743 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 72.1 and it has a slope rating of 124. Designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting, the Harding Park golf course opened in 1925. PGA Tour Properties manages this facility, with Tom Smith, PGA as the General Manager.

Determine proper club length for irons (Static Measurement)

The goal of proper club length is to allow a player to assume an athletic address position. A very tall player will stoop too much with a standard-length club, while a very short player will stand too upright. Proper shaft length can significantly influence the direction, consistency and distance of a golf shot by forcing the player into an address position that can be maintained throughout the golf swing.

What is Lie angle and what Lie angle do I need?

The lie angle of a club is the angle formed by the sole of the club and the shaft. This angle affects the position of the club head at address and impact. Proper lie will cause the center of the club head to strike the ground (good) rather than the heel or toe (bad).

Lie Angle Variations:

A club which is too upright for the golfer will hit the ground with the heel of the club, causing the clubface to close and resulting in a pull or hook (for right-handed players.) Help choosing proper club length and lie

Research indicates that lie angle is most effectively measured dynamically. It can be generalized that taller players require a more upright lie angle and shorter players a flatter lie angle. However, other variables affect impact lie angle such as the player’s address posture and how his/her hands are positioned at address and impact, either high or low. Therefore, a suitable lie angle cannot always be prescribed based on the player’s static (height and wrist-to-floor) measurement. Another good rule of thumb when deciding on proper club length is every ½” added to the standard length of a club will in return make the club play 1* more upright. Every 1/2″ subtracted will in return make the club play 1* flatter.

In order to achieve the most accurate club fitting, players should be fitted using both static and dynamic measurements. There is a direct correlation to the direction of the golf ball flight and the ability to swing consistently without compensations on the swing. To have accurate and correct measurements, you will need to have someone other than you gather the information. Lie angles listed are intended to be a reference chart only. Professional custom club fitting is needed and recommended to determine exact and correct length & lie.

Whether you have just started your game or you are an experienced golfer, it’s required for every golfer to know how many clubs are allowed in a golf bag during tournament or in a competition.  

How many clubs are allowed in a golf bag?

How many clubs are allowed in a golf bag is no different. The official maximum number of clubs allowed in a golf bag is 14. Golf’s governing bodies, the USGA and the R&A, have strict regulations on just about everything you can think of when it comes to golf equipment.

This may include three woods (driver, 3-wood and 5-wood), eight irons, (3-9 iron and pitching wedge), and putter. These are the standard 12 clubs in many golf bags. If the golfer starts with a number of clubs in his bag less than 14, he can add to the number of clubs until he reaches 14.

In details carry three woods in your bag. The driver, the 3-wood and the 5-wood are the three standard woods that most golfers use. Some golfers prefer a 7-wood and 9-wood instead of long irons or hybrids.

Carry at least one hybrid in your bag. Even tour players now carry this versatile club. It typically replaced the long irons, such as the 3-iron or 4-iron.

Put six irons and three wedges in your bag. Most golfers have a 4-iron, 5-iron, 6-iron, 7-iron, 8-iron and a 9-iron in their bags, as well as pitching, gap and sand wedges.

Place a putter in your bag for your work on the greens.

Add a lob wedge by removing a club you don’t typically use.

This question is regulated by Rule No. 4 the Rules of Golf (The Players’ Equipment):
Rule 4 covers the equipment that players may use during a round. Based on the principle that golf is a challenging game in which success should depend on the player’s judgment, skills and abilities, the player:
• Must use conforming clubs and balls,
• Is limited to no more than 14 clubs and normally must not
replace damaged or lost clubs, and
• Is restricted in the use of other equipment that gives artificial
help to his or her play.”

So, in a nutshell, golfers are restricted to carrying a maximum of 14 golf clubs in their bag during a round.

Is there any penalty for carrying too many clubs?

The penalty for carrying too many clubs in your bag is two strokes for each hole where a breach of the rule happened. That means if you have 15 clubs in your bag but don’t realize until you’re playing the second hole, you will receive a four-stroke penalty. Fortunately, the maximum penalty for breaking this rules is four strokes, so it won’t get any worse than that.

In Match Play, the penalty is one hole, meaning that if you break the rule the total match score is changed, instead of you just losing the hole you’re playing.

If you realize the breach while playing a hole, the penalty is assessed at the end of the hole. If instead you notice the violation in between holes, the penalty is applied to the hole you just completed.

Extra Clubs

When choosing your 14 clubs, you can usually add two clubs to the normal allotment of 12 clubs in the bag. The last two clubs can be a hybrid driver for use on the fairway and a wedge for the golfer’s short game. Or you may choose to use two wedges, which can include a lob wedge or sand wedge. The lob wedge provides better lift, while the sand wedge may help with those tough bunker shots.

Borrowing Clubs

In 1988, the USGA altered a rule about club-borrowing that allowed a player to borrow a club from anyone. The borrowed club could be used throughout the remainder of the round. However, in 1992, the USGA changed the rule back to the pre-1988 interpretation that allows you to borrow a club only from a partner you’re teaming up with during a tournament.

Hybrids

The hybrid golf club is a combination of a wood and iron that can help condense the number of clubs in a bag. Some hybrids look like an iron and some more resemble a 3-wood. The hybrid is counted as one of the clubs in the golf bag but can serve multiple purposes on the course. A hybrid can be used off the tee, as a replacement for long irons and sometimes for chip shots around the green. By using a hybrid, you may be able to eliminate a fairway wood and 3-iron, allowing you to add another wedge in your bag.
