What is the golfer’s elbow symptoms, treatment or brace? Golfer’s elbow isn’t as well-known as tennis elbow. While both are forms of elbow tendinitis, tennis elbow stems from damage to tendons on the outside of the elbow, while golfer’s elbow is caused by tendons on the inside. Golfer’s elbow is less common.

Golfer’s elbow is a form of tendonitis that causes pain and inflammation in the tendons that connect the forearm to the elbow. The pain centers on the bony bump on the inside of your elbow and may radiate into the forearm. It usually gets better with rest. The medical term is medial epicondylitis. Activities that require repetitive gripping motions, such as throwing, rock climbing, racket sports, or weight training, can often lead to golfer’s elbow. What is the golfer’s elbow symptoms, treatment or brace?

What is the golfer’s elbow symptoms?

With golfer’s elbow, the pain you have can happen suddenly or with time. If you have golfer’s elbow, you might have:

  • Stiffness in your elbow
  • Weakness in your hands and wrists
  • Tenderness and pain, usually on the inner side of your elbow or the inner side of your forearm, but you could have pain with certain movements, like making a fist or swinging a golf club
  • Tingling or numbness in your fingers (usually the ring and little fingers)

What causes Golfer’s Elbow?

Despite the name, this condition doesn’t just affect golfers. Any hand, wrist, or forearm motions that you do often can lead to golfer’s elbow.

Golfer’s elbow is usually caused by overusing the muscles in your forearm, which lets you grip, rotate your arm, and flex your wrist. Repetitive flexing, gripping, or swinging can cause pulls or tiny tears in the tendons. Things that can lead to golfer’s elbow besides golfing include:

  • Sports that rely on lots of throwing movements, like archery, baseball, football, javelin throwing, and softball. Pitching a ball incorrectly for example, can lead to golfer’s elbow, too. In fact, it’s sometimes called pitcher’s elbow.
  •  Sports that use a racket, like tennis. Not using the right techniques when playing or using them incorrectly can hurt your tendon. If you’re using a racket that’s too light or too heavy, that can also cause golfer’s elbow.
  •   Weight training. If you don’t use the right technique for lifting weights, you can overwork your elbow’s tendons and muscles.
  •  Repetitive movements. If you’re a carpenter, painter, plumber, or you work in construction, you can get golfer’s elbow. Lots of forceful, repeating motions can cause it.

People may also get it from using tools like screwdrivers and hammers, raking, or painting.

Exercises to Prevent and Treat Golfer’s Elbow

Most of the time, golfer’s elbow will go away without any special treatment, but you can do stretching and strengthening exercises to help make it go away faster. They can also help you avoid golfer’s elbow.

  • Eccentric exercises strengthen the muscle while it’s relaxed, not tight.
  • Stretching helps with mobility.

Talk to your doctor or physical therapist to find out to come up with an exercise plan that’s right for you. Webmd has suggested below excises as remedy –

Golfer’s elbow stretch

You will feel this stretch in the underside of your forearm.

  1. Extend your affected arm in front of you with your fingers and palm facing up.
  2. Use your opposite hand to gently pull your fingers and wrist down toward your body.
  3. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds.
  4. Do 2–5 reps.

Isometric wrist strengthening (extension)

Keep your body still throughout this exercise.

  1. While seated, place your affected forearm on a table or the arm of a chair with your palm facing down.
  2. Place your opposite hand on the back of your affected hand.
  3. Press your affected hand up, using your opposite hand to create resistance by pressing down.
  4. Continue for 10 seconds, slowly increasing the resistance.
  5. Gently release. Do 15 reps.

Resisted wrist extension

While seated, hold a weight with your affected arm.

  1. Place your forearm on a table or the arm of a chair with your hand hanging over the edge and your palm facing down.
  2. Slowly lower your hand down before raising it back to the original position.
  3. Do 1–3 sets of 15 reps.

  1. While seated, rest your affected forearm on a table or the arm of a chair with your palm facing up.
  2. Press your opposite palm into your affected hand.
  3. Press your affected hand upwards as you use your opposite hand to create resistance by pressing down.

Diagnosis

Only a doctor can diagnose medial epicondylitis, and a physical examination is often all that is necessary.

The doctor will likely ask about daily activities at home and work. In some cases, the doctor will want to take an X-ray of the arm.

The physical exam will involve laying the forearm on a table with the palm up. The doctor will then apply pressure to the hand and ask the person to flex the hand towards the wrist.

Medial epicondylitis will be diagnosed if the person experiences pain on the inner side of the arm when flexing the wrist.

What is the golfer’s elbow treatment?

What is the golfer's elbow symptoms, treatment or brace?
A brace may help to provide support to the elbow, and ease symptoms.

Initial treatment for medial epicondylitis can start before a person sees a doctor. Resting from the problematic activity may relieve the pain within a few days.

To aid recovery, a person may also:

  • apply ice to the elbow and inner part of the forearm
  • stretch the forearm
  • use a brace for extra support
  • return gradually to activity that involves the arm
  • take over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medications
  • practice strengthening exercises

Elbow braces are available to purchase online.

In some cases, a doctor may also recommend:

Surgery will be considered if other treatment options have not worked. The surgeon may remove damaged tissue. They may also remove buildups of scar tissue or extra bone, which could be putting pressure on the tendon.

Compare tennis elbow vs golfer’s elbow

The anatomical structures involved in tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are very similar and the symptoms are also similar, but they appear on opposite sides of the elbow and arm.

Common symptoms of tennis elbow include:

  • Pain that radiates from the outside of your elbow and down your forearm
  • Tenderness on the outside of your elbow
  • Weakness in your forearm or a weak grip
  • Pain when you grip things, twist something or, if you play tennis, especially with backhand strokes

Golfer’s elbow symptoms are similar, but occur on the inside of your arm and include:

  • Pain and tenderness on the inside of your elbow
  • Pain that radiates down your arm from the inside of your elbow
  • Weakness in your hand or wrist
  • Numbness or tingling in your ring and little fingers
  • Pain when you grip or twist things
  • Pain when you flex your wrist

Both tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow symptoms usually start gradually and get worse over time.

What is good in PreciseGolf Co Precise X7 junior complete golf club set?

3-12 age range

Although we will be going over the set that is designed for 3-5 year olds, you can get this same set in 4-6 year-old sizes and 9-12 year-old sizes. You can also get them in right and left-handed head orientations.

Graphite shafts

The PreciseGolf Co. Precise X7 Junior Complete Set is features graphite shafts. We believe that it’s best to get a child accustomed to graphite shafts as soon as possible as they allow for maximum distance and gets a child used to flex.

Lightweight

The graphite shafts keep their weight down so that even the smallest players can carry and use them without being detrimentally encumbered.

5 clubs

The PreciseGolf Co. Precise X7 Junior Complete Set features a total of 5 clubs. First up is the driver which features a generous 15 degree loft and a very large sweet spot. The face is nice and wide so it will be easier for your child to not only hit with; but hit straighter with.

Irons

Next up are the irons. You get a 6/7 iron and a 9/PW. These irons are very forgiving which is essential to build the confidence of a young player. They play very well even with off-center hits and are even perimeter weighted.

Putter

The putter is nothing to write home about but it does feature a mallet design and an aligned face to help with stroke and aim. The bag features the same orange design as the clubs and shoulder straps that allow it to be carried like a backpack. There are also leg stands that support it when at rest.

Hybrid wood

The The PreciseGolf Co. Precise X7 Junior Complete Set even includes a hybrid wood! This wood features a 22 degree loft and a very generous club face. We saw that most of our kids were able to wield the hybrid wood deftly and start to develop a proper form.

Wilson Profile Junior Golf Club Set

Great Set for Beginning Golfers

KEY FEATURES

  • Exceptional quality throughout the set, especially with woods and irons
  • Additional wedge in the Profile set gives advantage to experienced junior golfers
  • The stand bag in the set is dependable and accommodating for easy carrying

The Wilson Profile Junior Club Set is an excellent collection of clubs that feels like a custom fitted selection that will please most junior golfers.

Featuring high-quality woods and irons that are easy to swing while producing jaw-dropping club speed for exceptional distance, the set is one of the best we tested for junior level amateurs.

Beginning with the two woods in the set, the Profile collection features a stunning driver and hybrid duo that accommodates swings of all speeds while boosting distance and shot height.

The driver in the Profile set has a slightly smaller clubhead than in other junior sets we tested, but that didn’t take away from the quality contact we witnessed in swing after swing. Although Wilson does not provide the loft on the club, we estimated that it stands around 15-degrees.

The second wood is a hybrid, somewhere around 25-degrees, that has a classic look with a high-quality finish. With a flatter sole, the hybrid does well at staying low to the ground for shots off the grass or while using a tee.

The irons are unique, first in that there are three of them, and second in that Wilson has discarded using numbers on the clubs and has instead, placed designations on them. For example, in the Profile set, there is a “Long Iron,” “Short Iron,” and “Wedge.”

The Long Iron is something akin to a 7-iron and provides solid pop when hit in the center of the club face. Same goes for the Short Iron, which translates to a 9-iron in loft, also giving the junior golfer terrific height on shots for a soft landing on the green.

Finally, we loved the inclusion of a wedge. It is incredibly essential to get your child feeling comfortable with a wedge since most scoring is done with strong wedge work around the greens.

A stand bag is that it has strong legs and a padded top to protect the clubs completes the set. We would have liked a rain hood included in the Profile set, but there’s little to complain about as this is one terrific set for a young golfer with a bit of experience on the course.

Wilson Profile JGI Golf Club Set

Best For Golfers Aged 11-14: Best Starter Set for Older Junior Golfers

KEY FEATURES

  • Well-built clubs that can withstand the punishment of inexperienced golfers
  • Loved the low, flatter hybrid that does well in helping golfers get height on shots
  • The wedge in the set is sleek and produces high spin for softer landing shots

Designed for golfers that are aged 11-14, the Wilson Profile JGI Golf Club Set is a quality collection of clubs that will help beginning golfers that are slightly taller and stronger with better swing speeds.

These super game-improvement clubs are built to enhance the young golfer’s introduction to the game. In each club, the weight has been shifted down into the club head for a lower center of gravity that produces exceptionally high shots from the tee and fairway.

For the set’s two woods, you’ll notice how low the profile is with a rounder and flatter sole that keeps the club close to the ground, preventing juniors from topping the golf ball. The driver and hybrid in the Profile JGI set are stunners, with a black and dark blue finish that will instill confidence in the younger golfer.

The irons are cavity backed, and perimeter-weighted allowing for more solid contact at impact. Graphite-shafted, these two irons, “Long Iron” and “Short Iron,” play well from anywhere on the course and provide a solid introduction to the iron game.

Next on the list is a dynamic wedge that we all adored. The silver wedge has the shape and style of a blade but carves out a small cavity behind the sweet spot. Also graphite-shafted, the wedge does admirably at hitting high and soft shots that help the scorecard for the struggling junior golfer.

All five of the major clubs in the set have large sweet spots that accent forgiveness and reduce the shot-killing sidespin that ruins rounds.

The putter in the Profile JGI set is a blade-style putter that has a soft insert through the heart of the club face. The club provides reliable roll during our testing, but some children may feel more confident with a mallet’s look and feel.

Again, if we had one big complaint about this terrific set, it is that there aren’t more clubs! Although we love the addition of the wedge, the set feels lacking in a sense by the lack of completion. Even though Wilson says the club set range is up to 14 years old, it would be hard to send a high school-aged golfer to a tournament in a set like this as you would need far more clubs.

Another solid addition to the best junior golf clubs market, the Wilson JGI is great for golfers around the age of 11-12.

Golf Buddy Voice 2

PROS

  • An advanced voice-enabled GPS device that gives clear readout via voice or text
  • Provides accurate distances to the front, back and center of the green on second shots
  • Snap-on clip keeps the Voice 2 secure against your hat or bag

CONS

  • Has a long load up time when you arrive at the course, so plan ahead when using

The Voice 2 from Golf Buddy is another popular version of their petite yet highly capable line of voice-enabled GPS devices.

Design

The device itself has 1.76 x 1.78 x 49 inches of size, but the display takes only 1 inch. With 1.02 oz of weights, the device is extremely light. It’s available in black, black/white, grey, silver, and white/blue colors. It can be clipped to your hat, belt, or bag.

Key features

This golf GPS rangefinder provides shot distance measurement as well as the information on the front, back, and center of the green. It’s also equipped with auto golf club, course, and hole recognition. The Dynamic Green View shows you the shape of the green and allows changing your measuring point to different locations. It also contains 40, 000 courses. However, even despite its multifunctionality, the GolfBuddy Voice 2 still remains cheap golf GPS device.

The power button and the position mark button are located on the left side of the unit. With the help of two buttons located on the right side, you can adjust the volume level.

The battery works for 14 hours which is enough for a couple of rounds.

Golf Buddy has taken the Voice 2 and increased the battery life while keeping the same high contrast, large number display that gives users an exact yardage for their next shot.

Legal for tournament use, the Voice 2 is water resistant and comes with a battery that lasts up to 14 hours per charge, good for over two rounds of use. With eight languages pre-loaded, the Voice 2 delivers outstanding performance.

Multiple Yardage Readouts

You shouldn’t have a problem picking the right club when you see how precise the yardage is using the Voice 2. Not only will you get the distance of each shot after it happens, but the Voice 2 will get you ready for your upcoming shot with accurate yardage to various areas of the green.

Easy-To-Use Interface

We recommend that you show up early to allow the device to load the course you are playing, but overall, the Voice 2 is painless and straightforward to operate.

The Voice 2 is remarkably easy to set up and use. Once you choose a male or female voice to guide your round, the Golf Buddy devices provide automatic course and hole recognition.

Dynamic Green View Technology

Beginning golfers who use the Voice 2 commonly see their average improve dramatically in the following rounds after using this GPS device.

Once you are close to the green, the Voice 2 is going to give you a complete look of the shape and slope of the surface. You’ll be able to see where you need to play your shot for the easiest birdie putt.

Bushnell Phantom

PROS

  • Bushnell has installed a magnetic mount in the back of Phantom for easy mounting inside the cartB
  • Easy to read screen delivers accurate yardage in large black numbers that contrast well with the display
  • Preloaded with 36,000 courses that automatically update through Bluetooth connection

CONS

  • Need an app on a smartphone to see the layout of the hole, so juggling two devices might not be appealing for some golfers

Design

The handheld GPS unit is small.  It barely weighs anything at 52 grams/1.8 ounces – what?  Yes, it’s tiny.  The screen size might only be 1.4 x 1.4 inches on the 2.3 x 2.3 inch size face, but that’s what makes it so easy to have and carry around.  Just be sure not to lose it.

Key features

The Phantom from Bushnell is one of the most fun GPS handheld devices we’ve ever tested. Large and with a square shape, the well-designed readout makes the Phantom clear to read.

With minimal buttons, the Phantom’s simplicity shines through as an excellent option for golfers of all skill levels, including mid-handicappers looking to make the jump into single digits.

When using the Phantom alongside Bushnell Golf app, the golfer gets a complete overview of the hole and precise distances to clear hazards and navigate tough dog legs. The app gives the golfers a 3D view of the hole and layout, bringing the Phantom’s yardage readout to life.

BITE Magnetic Mount

A feature that we adored was the BITE Magnetic Mount technology that keeps the Phantom right on your golf cart using any metal surface.

Having the magnetic capability also frees up our hands to focus on choosing the right club rather than cycling through screens on less intuitive GPS devices.

The magnet is very powerful and not once did we see the Phantom slide or move during our round.

Auto Course Recognition and Auto Hole Advance

One of the features we loved with the Phantom is how intuitive it is when on the course. It will recognize and preload your course as you get ready to play as well as move its readings to the next hole as you finish out on the green.

When using alongside the savvy Bushnell Golf app, players get a full picture of the hole and the yardage needed on each shot.

Alternate of Golf Buddy Voice 2 vs Bushnell Phantom

GolfBuddy Voice X

The GolfBuddy Voice line has been a huge success from the beginning. The VoiceX is the latest in this line and has a few nice upgrades from its predecessor the GolfBuddy Voice 2. The most notable improvement is that it adds Bluetooth connectivity to your smartphone for automatic updates to the golf course you’re playing when you enter golf mode. The screen is a little larger and it has a Big Numbers mode and manual pin placement capability. It also adds a fairly detailed GPS activity tracker for runners and walkers. It may sacrifice some battery life for the extra features, but should still easily get 2 full rounds.

Bushnell Neo Ghost

We had high expectations for the Bushnell Neo Ghost and about 80% of users love it. Unfortunately, about 20% of users were unhappy. It seems there are more defective units than is typical from Bushnell. This is an excellent value, but if you happen to be the unlucky one who gets the lemon, you’ll have to go through the hassle of returning it. If you’re not up for the risk,

Buying Guide

We now dive into a list of several key buying considerations that should make your buying decision a little bit easier.

Type Of Iron

There are technically lots of different types of irons out there. However, to simplify the process you could break the different styles into two broader categories: blade or cavity back.

Blade irons are muscly and small and designed to help you really control your ball flight. The make of the club is such that the ball responds to the exact type of swing you put on the ball.

Cavity back irons are usually designed with the purpose of making sure that you hit the ball straight, and nice and high up in the air. It is still possible to hit a bad shot with cavity back irons, but relative to a blade-style club, the chances are much lower.

Skill Level

Mizuno irons are largely thought to be for better players. However the truth of the matter is that even some of their clubs that fall squarely into the payers iron category are much more forgiving than similar products from other manufacturers.

That’s one of the things I have also loved about Mizuno, they provide really great versatile clubs that will suit a wide variety of swings. I’ve played blades from other companies before that are really punishing on days when your swing is a little bit quirky. Not so with Mizuno. Their large sweet spots democratize players irons making them a friendly choice for the masses.

Now all of this said there is a caveat. If you are a true beginner you will want to stay far away from their blade-style clubs. You’ll be much better served with something that features a wide sole, a generous offset and a sweet spot big enough to keep your ball in play no matter how you are swinging.

Configuration

One of the most important decisions you fave when buying a new set of irons is to select a configuration. In other words, which irons do you want in the bag?

Some retailers will let you hand-select which irons you order. Granted the actual choice is fairly limited. From a six-iron on up there really isn’t much wiggle room. Everyone pretty much keeps those clubs consistent and are well-served to do so. It’s the longer irons where you get some room to be creative. Lots of people like to sub out their lower irons for hybrids.

If you feel you might do that now is the time to decide. Forgoing an iron or two can save you hundreds of dollars on the sticker price of your clubs. You can then funnel that money you save towards the purchase of some new hybrids. It’s a true win-win.

Age Of The Club

Not all of the irons on our list are brand new. In fact several of them have been on the market for a few years already. Personally, I think buying slightly dated equipment is going to be the right move for most people. It’s a great way to save hundreds of dollars on gear that is really no different than the brand new stuff anyway.

However some players feel a little bit weird about buying older clubs. If you fall into that category understand that it comes with a hefty price. Newer stuff may be slightly more aerodynamic which will translate into easier distance. However, unless you are in a competitive situation the small differences may not be worthwhile.

Cross Sets

I like cross sets. Here is how they work: with easy to hit irons like your six-pitching wedge you select a players iron. For your more challenging clubs like the long irons, you can then choose game improvement clubs. It’s kind of an alternative to the hybrid approach mentioned in the last heading. Not every retailer will let you take this approach.

When mixing and matching with irons it is also important that you speak with a professional about what combinations are appropriate. If you choose two irons that are radically different it may lead to some problems with your swing.
